With the rank of lieutenant colonel, Woods served in the Vietnam War, notably as a member of the Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets. He left active duty in 1974.

Earl Woods passed away on May 3, 2006, at the age of 74, in his Cypress, California, home. The Tiger Woods Foundation claimed that cancer was to blame. In addition to having prostate cancer that returned in 2004, Earl Woods also had heart issues, diabetes, and poor circulation in his legs.
Tiger Woods posted the following on his website, tigerwoods.com, to announce the passing of his father: “My father was my closest friend and most influential figure. He was a fantastic coach, mentor, father, husband, friend, and soldier.”
